A full periodontal examination measures pocket depth at several points around every tooth, checks for bleeding on probing, tooth mobility, and plaque control, and reviews your medical history for factors — such as smoking or diabetes — that affect healing. X-rays are taken when bone levels need a closer look.

Why this step matters
Thorough mechanical cleaning — removing plaque and calculus and smoothing root surfaces — is the evidence-based foundation of gum treatment for almost every patient. It isn't a warm-up before the "real" treatment; for most people, it's the step that does the most work. Laser adjuncts, when used, are added to this foundation rather than replacing it.

Possible treatment options
This may include repeat subgingival instrumentation of specific sites and, where clinically appropriate, laser-assisted disinfection to reduce bacteria in pockets that are hard to reach mechanically. As a general guide, sites that stay shallow and stop bleeding are usually considered stable, while sites that remain deep — often in the region of 5–6mm — or continue to bleed are more likely to need this extra step. Pocket depth is only one of several factors we weigh.

LANAP® (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a specific, patented, trademarked protocol that requires a particular pulsed Nd:YAG laser. In the industry, "LANAP" is frequently used — incorrectly — as a generic label for any laser-based gum treatment, including procedures that use an entirely different type of laser.
