TMJ Clinic —
Jaw Pain & Bite
Disorder Treatment
Specialist diagnosis and management of temporomandibular joint disorders, jaw pain, teeth grinding, and bite-related headaches — at Excellence Dental, Indiranagar.
Understanding
TMJ Disorders
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most complex joints in the human body — capable of hinging, sliding, and rotating simultaneously. When this joint or the muscles that control it are not functioning correctly, the result can be a wide range of symptoms that significantly impact quality of life.
TMJ disorders are often misdiagnosed or undertreated because their symptoms — headaches, ear pain, neck tension — can mimic other conditions. At Excellence Dental, we take a thorough, systematic approach to TMJ assessment: examining the joint, the bite, the muscles, and the patient's history to identify the true underlying cause before recommending treatment.
Our treatment philosophy is conservative first — we begin with the least invasive, most reversible options and escalate only when necessary. The vast majority of TMJ patients achieve significant, lasting relief without surgery.
Common Symptoms
- Jaw pain or soreness, especially in the morning
- Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when opening or closing the mouth
- Difficulty or pain when chewing
- Locking of the jaw (limited mouth opening)
- Headaches, particularly around the temples
- Ear pain or a feeling of fullness in the ears
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Facial muscle fatigue or tenderness
- Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism)
- Worn, chipped, or sensitive teeth from grinding
TMJ Treatment Options
We offer a comprehensive range of evidence-based treatments, personalised to the underlying cause of each patient's TMJ disorder.
Occlusal Splint Therapy
A custom-fabricated night guard or occlusal splint is the cornerstone of TMJ treatment. Worn during sleep, it protects teeth from grinding damage, reduces muscle hyperactivity, and repositions the jaw for improved joint comfort.
- Custom-fitted for precise comfort and effectiveness
- Reduces muscle tension and joint loading
- Protects teeth from grinding damage
- Non-invasive first-line treatment
- Significant relief often within 4–8 weeks
Bite Equilibration
When bite misalignment is a contributing factor to TMJ symptoms, selective reshaping of tooth surfaces (occlusal adjustment) can redistribute chewing forces more evenly, reducing stress on the joint and associated muscles.
- Addresses root cause when bite is a factor
- Precise, conservative tooth reshaping
- Reduces uneven loading on the TMJ
- Often combined with splint therapy
- Long-lasting results when indicated
Physiotherapy & Jaw Exercises
Targeted physiotherapy exercises strengthen and stretch the muscles of mastication, improve joint mobility, and help retrain jaw movement patterns. Particularly effective for muscle-related TMJ pain and limited mouth opening.
- Improves jaw mobility and range of motion
- Reduces muscle tension and pain
- Retrains healthy jaw movement patterns
- Can be performed at home
- Complements other TMJ treatments
Botox for Bruxism
Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections into the masseter and temporalis muscles reduce the force of clenching and grinding, providing significant relief for patients with severe bruxism and associated TMJ pain.
- Reduces grinding force by up to 60–70%
- Relief lasts 4–6 months per treatment
- Minimal discomfort — quick in-office procedure
- Also reduces jaw muscle bulk (facial slimming)
- Effective when splints alone are insufficient
Orthodontic Correction
When significant bite misalignment is the underlying cause of TMJ symptoms, orthodontic treatment to correct the bite may be recommended as a long-term solution, often in conjunction with splint therapy.
- Addresses skeletal and dental bite discrepancies
- Long-term solution for bite-related TMJ
- Coordinated with splint therapy
- Prevents recurrence of symptoms
- Improves both function and aesthetics
Stress Management
Stress is a major contributor to bruxism and TMJ disorders. We work with patients to identify stress-related triggers and provide guidance on relaxation techniques, sleep hygiene, and lifestyle modifications.
- Identifies and addresses stress triggers
- Relaxation and mindfulness guidance
- Sleep hygiene recommendations
- Reduces nocturnal clenching
- Holistic approach to long-term management
Our Diagnostic
Approach
Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective TMJ treatment. Many patients arrive at our clinic having been told their jaw pain is "stress" or having been prescribed pain medication without any investigation of the underlying cause. We take a different approach.
Our TMJ assessment includes a detailed history, examination of the joint and associated muscles, bite analysis, and dental X-rays. In complex cases, we may refer for CBCT (cone beam CT) imaging of the joint for a three-dimensional view of the bony structures.
Only after a thorough understanding of the cause do we recommend treatment — starting with the most conservative, reversible options and escalating only if needed. Our goal is not just to relieve symptoms, but to address the underlying cause for lasting results.
