What Is a Sinus Lift
and Why Is It Needed?
The maxillary sinuses are air-filled cavities located above the upper back teeth (molars and premolars). When these teeth are lost, the sinus cavity gradually expands downward into the space previously occupied by the tooth roots — a process called sinus pneumatisation. This reduces the height of bone available for implant placement.
A dental implant requires a minimum bone height to be placed safely without penetrating the sinus. When this minimum is not met, a sinus lift is performed: bone graft material is placed beneath the sinus floor, lifting the sinus membrane upward and creating the bone height needed for implant placement.
Sinus lifts are one of the most commonly performed pre-implant procedures and have an excellent long-term success record when performed by an experienced specialist.
Two Surgical Approaches
Lateral Window (Open) Approach
A small window is created in the lateral wall of the sinus. The sinus membrane is lifted and bone graft is packed in from the side. Used when significant bone volume is required. Implants are typically placed 6–9 months later.
Crestal (Osteotome) Approach
Performed through the implant site itself using specialised instruments. Less invasive, with faster healing. Suitable when only a small amount of bone height needs to be gained (typically 1–3 mm). Implant can often be placed simultaneously.

The Sinus Lift Procedure
Step by Step
CBCT Assessment
A cone beam CT scan precisely maps your sinus anatomy, bone height, and the position of the sinus membrane to plan the safest surgical approach.
Surgical Access
Under local anaesthesia, a small window is created in the gum and lateral sinus wall. The sinus membrane is carefully elevated from the sinus floor.
Graft Placement
Bone graft material is packed into the space created beneath the elevated sinus membrane, building up the bone height required for implant placement.
Healing & Implant
The site is closed and allowed to heal for 6–9 months. Once the graft has matured, the dental implant is placed into the newly formed bone.
